A case study of too much Iodine.
Why it’s important to see a doctor trained in Natural Medicine and Supplements.
Supplements can be powerful tools for supporting health, but they must be used thoughtfully and with proper guidance. Many people assume that because a supplement is “natural,” it is automatically safe at any dose. In reality, nutrients act like medicine in the body, and taking the wrong amount can create unintended consequences. I recently saw a clear example of this with a 60-year-old woman who had been taking iodine supplements at a dose nearly 80 times higher than the typical daily requirement for about a year.
While iodine is an essential nutrient needed for thyroid hormone production, excessive amounts can actually inhibit the thyroid through a well-known physiological response. In this case, her thyroid function became suppressed, and her laboratory testing showed a markedly elevated thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH), indicating that her thyroid was no longer producing adequate hormones. When the thyroid slows down, many other systems in the body are affected.
One of the most common consequences is a significant rise in cholesterol levels, because thyroid hormones play a major role in regulating lipid metabolism. As a result, her cholesterol became extremely elevated, creating additional cardiovascular risk that did not previously exist. Situations like this highlight why supplement use should always be approached with care and professional oversight. Even nutrients that are beneficial at appropriate levels can cause harm when taken in excess or without considering the individual’s physiology, medical history, and lab values.
This is why it is so important to work with a clinician who is thoroughly trained in both natural medicine and human physiology. A naturopathic doctor with a doctoral-level education in natural medicine understands how nutrients interact with the body’s systems and can interpret laboratory data to guide safe and effective treatment. With proper evaluation and individualized care, supplements can be used as powerful tools for healing rather than becoming unintended sources of imbalance.
